William and Kate’s Wedding a Pleasant Change

Although I had said I wouldn’t watch the Royal Wedding, I ended up watching it and I must say it was mostly enjoyable. Long live William and Kate.

The truth is, there was little choice of television where I live; either football or the Royal Wedding. The latter seemed less daunting and more interesting than football, so I switched it on and watched and listened in the background as I did other things.

I enjoyed it more than I would have thought. It’s good to see two young people beginning their married lives together and in this case of course, the two people are special, being part of the British royalty. In an unhappy world, this was a happy occasion.

We’ll no doubt hear about it for years to come. Did you watch? What did you think about it?

Learning from the Japanese

Japanese are very different from the rest of us in the West. However, they are different in many good ways and we could learn from them. After the recent tsunami and all the death and destruction it caused, here is what Japanese people exhibited that is often not seen elsewhere:

1. THE CALM
Not a single visual of chest-beating or wild grief. Sorrow itself has been elevated.

2. THE DIGNITY
Disciplined queues for water and groceries. Not a rough word or a crude gesture.

3. THE ABILITY
The incredible architects, for instance. Buildings swayed but didn’t fall.

4. THE GRACE
People bought only what they needed for the present, so everybody could get something.

5. THE ORDER
No looting in shops. No honking and no overtaking on the roads. Just understanding.

6. THE SACRIFICE
Fifty workers stayed back to pump sea water in the N-reactors. How will they ever be repaid?

7. THE TENDERNESS
Restaurants cut prices. An unguarded ATM is left alone. The strong cared for the weak.

8. THE TRAINING
The old and the children, everyone knew exactly what to do. And they did just that.

9. THE MEDIA
They showed magnificent restraint in the bulletins. No silly reporters. Only calm reportage.

10. THE CONSCIENCE
When the power went off in a store, people put things back on the shelves and left quietly.

The Japanese have a deserved respect.

Ricky Nixon’s Sex Allegation and News Poll

In today’s Herald Sun there is an article about Ricky Nixon, whom I had never heard of until a couple of days ago. He’s apparently a 47 year old player/manager in the Australian Football League.

Nixon is reported as having a sexual relationship with a 17 year old girl who alleges she took photos that proved Nixon was in her room. According to the report, cocaine or other drugs were also involved.

Although cocaine supply and use is illegal, I’m not sure screwing a 17 year old girl is. As far as I know, the age of consent for women in Victoria is 16 or 17. So what’s the big deal?

This is a typical news media beat up because Nixon is a high profile football employee. If it was you or me, nobody would give a rat’s arse. Sex is not an offence between consenting adults and most of us get it when and where we can.

What bothers me most is that Nixon hasn’t had a chance to say anything in his defence and the news media has a poll asking, “Should Ricky Nixon be deregistered as a player manager?”. Disappointingly, 83% of respondents at the time I looked said “yes”. Tried and executed in absentia without any natural justice.

In the clear light of day, if he has committed drugs offences, that’s a matter for him and the Victoria Police. I have no great love of drugs users or suppliers. If he had sex with a woman of the age of consent, that’s a private matter.

Condemning him before he has had a chance to respond or stand trial if indictments are issued, is very poor use of freedom of expression.

Shane Warne and Liz Hurley Need Privacy

I’m very envious of Shane Warne apparently having a fling with the shapely Liz Hurley, but I’m a firm believer that they should be permitted their privacy and not hounded by the Paparazzi.

Yes, there is an argument that if you are in bed with the media when you want publicity, you have to expect it when you are in bed with someone else; quid pro quo and all that. I still think it’s unreasonable to hound so-called celebrities so that they can’t seem to find a moment of peace without being under scrutiny.

While I acknowledge Shane Warne’s cricket prowess, I’ve always thought of him as a bit of a turkey when it comes to all the really stupid things that he is alleged to have done with his mobile phone.  But, like the rest of us, he just wants to have a bit of happiness, a bit of pussy and probably a glass of ale or two.  He should be left to do that unhindered so he can get good value for his millions.

So should Liz. Let’s face it, she probably won’t be beautiful forever so it’s only reasonable that she enjoy herself as much as possible. It is a concern that she seems to choose losers, but then many women do and there’s no reason why a stunning model should be any different.

My preference is for Asian or African/ebony women, but I still find Liz very attractive (she’s more than just a nice body with a pulse, my normal criteria for screw-ability). Given half a chance and perhaps half an hour, I’d be more than happy to share an orgasm with her. If that’s what Shane and her are sharing, then all the best of British Luck to them. Lucky bastards!

We just need to leave them alone to get on with it in privacy. Is that too much to ask?

Do You Agree With Euthansia?

While a few countries allow euthanasia, most don’t, but the fight for people’s right to end their lives is being fought all over the world. In Australia’s Northern Territory, euthanasia was legal for a year or so before a politician who is a religious person, submitted a private member’s bill to have the legislation quashed. By the time the law was quashed, a handful of people had chosen to end their lives.

Without exception, each was in pain suffering from a terminal illness.

While we are kind to our animals and euthanise them when they are seriously injured or so terminally ill, we expect our fellow humans to die a miserable death of suffering and heartache.

In New Zealand a medical practitioner facing a terminal illness has appealed for euthanasia to be legalised in that country. He has written a compelling argument in the NZ Herald that is worth reading whether you are for or against euthanasia.

In response, the NZ Herald has run a ballot to ask people whether they are for or against euthanasia. You’ll be surprised at how few are against it.

The more informed people become, the more likely it is that we will arrive at a time when we allow people to die with dignity.

What do you think?
